전생에 바라문 마하세나였고, 사리풋타의 본명 우파티사(Upatissa)를 따서 이름 지어진 비구로, 깊은 숲속에 은거하여 명상하기 전에 동료 비구들에게 가사와 담요를 시주한 것으로 유명하다.
