ကောသလတိုင်း ဗြာဟ္မဏရွာတစ်ရွာဖြစ်ပြီး ဝင်ပေါက်၌ ဝါးတောရှိသောကြောင့် ထိုအမည်ရသည်ဟု ဆိုသည်။ ဗုဒ္ဓ တစ်ကြိမ် ထိုနေရာတွင် တည်းခိုတော်မူပြီး ဝေဠုဒွါရေယျသုတ် (Veḷudvāreyya Sutta) ကို ဟောကြားတော်မူခဲ့သည်။
