අනුරාධපුරයේ උතුරු පැත්තේ ප්‍රධාන භික්ෂු ආයතනයක් වන අතර මීට පෙර තපස්වීන්ගේ ආශ්‍රමයක් තිබූ ස්ථානයේ වට්ටගාමිණී අභය රජු විසින් ඉදිකරන ලදී. එහි සංඝයා පසුව මහාවිහාරයෙන් වෙන් වී වෙනම නිකායක් පිහිටුවා ගත්හ.
