약 열다섯 세기 동안 스리랑카의 수도였던 곳으로, 이전 정착지 자리에 판두카바야 왕이 건설했으며 이후 여러 왕조를 거치며 호수, 공원, 승원으로 아름답게 꾸며졌으나 11세기에 결국 버려졌다.
