Kumbhaṇḍa2

Person

Класс духов с раздутыми животами, находящихся под властью царя дэвов Вирулхи, также давший название сутте, в которой Маха-Моггаллана сообщает, что видел голодного духа, бывшего некогда продажным судьёй.

A class of spirits mentioned with Yakkhā, Asurā, and Nāgā. They live in the South and Virūḷha is their king (D.ii.257; D.iii.198). In the Vidhurapaṇḍita Jātaka (J.vi.272), Kumbhīra (q.v.) is mentioned as one of their chiefs. They had huge stomachs, and their genital organs were as big as pots, hence their name. DA.iii.964.

Kumbhaṇḍa Sutta.– Mahā-Moggallāna reports seeing a hungry ghost with testicles as big as pots, while descending from Vultures’ Peak. The Buddha confirms it, and says that the ghost was formerly a corrupt judge in Rājagaha. S.ii.258.
