Sandhāna

Person

Un maître de maison de Rājagaha et disciple du Bouddha, dont la conversation avec l’ascète errant Nigrodha mena à l’enseignement de l’Udumbarika Sutta

A householder of Rājagaha. He was a follower of the Buddha, and it was his conversation with the wanderer Nigrodha that led to the teaching of the Udumbarika Sutta.

Buddhaghosa says (DA.iii.832) that he was the leader of five hundred lay disciples (upāsaka) and was a Non-returner. On one occasion, the Buddha sang his praises in the assembly for six qualities that he possessed. In the Aṅguttaranikāya he is mentioned in a list of eminent lay disciples (A.iii.451; cf. Dvy.540).
