นักอรรถกถาผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดแห่งพระไตรปิฎก เดิมเป็นปราชญ์พราหมณ์ผู้บวชในพระศาสนา เดินทางไปลังกา แต่งวิสุทธิมรรค และแปลอรรถกถาสิงหลโบราณเป็นภาษาบาลี

The greatest commentator on the Tipiṭaka, a Brahmin scholar who joined the Order, travelled to Sri Lanka, wrote the Visuddhimagga, and rendered the ancient Sinhalese commentaries into Pāḷi.

เรียกว่าจุลพุทธโฆสะ เพื่อแยกจากนักอรรถกถาผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ชื่อเดียวกัน เป็นพระภิกษุชาวลังกาผู้ได้รับการยกย่องว่าแต่งผลงานสองชิ้น และด้วยคำขอของท่าน พระพุทธโฆสะ (1) จึงแต่งอรรถกถาพระอภิธรรม

Called Culla Buddhaghosa to distinguish him from the greater commentator of the same name, a Sri Lankan monk credited with two works and at whose request Buddhaghosa (1) wrote his Abhidhamma commentaries.
