모두에게 미움받던 잔인한 왕에 관한 자타카로, 그의 죽음에 백성들은 기뻐했지만, 폭군이 지옥에서 돌아와 다시 매일의 매질을 계속할까 두려워 홀로 울던 그의 문지기만은 예외였다. 데바닷타(Devadatta)의 죽음에 군중이 축하한 이유를 설명하려 설해졌으며, 그 사악한 왕은 데바닷타의 전생으로 밝혀졌다.

A Jātaka about a cruel and universally hated king whose death is met with public rejoicing, except by his own doorkeeper, who alone weeps out of fear the tyrant might return from hell to resume his daily beatings, told to explain why crowds celebrated at Devadatta’s death, with the wicked king identified as an earlier life of Devadatta.
