부처님 시대의 십육대국 중 하나인 민족과 그 나라로, 파바와 쿠시나라라는 두 수도로 나뉘어 있었다. 부처님은 파바에서 마지막 공양을 드신 후 쿠시나라에서 입멸하셨다.
