  • 自分のものでない蓮の花を嗅いだだけの苦行者を女神が厳しく叱る一方、すぐそばで植物を根こそぎ引き抜いている男には何も言わないという本生譚で、苦行者が目指す清浄さに照らせば最も小さな過ちさえ際立って暗く見えると説明し、蓮の花を嗅いで森の女神に同様に叱られた比丘にちなんで説かれた。

  • A Jātaka in which a goddess sharply rebukes an ascetic for merely smelling a lotus flower not his own while saying nothing to a man nearby uprooting the plants outright, explaining that even the smallest fault appears glaringly dark against the purity to which the ascetic aspires, told about a monk similarly rebuked by a forest deity for smelling a lotus.
