Fils d’une femme très pauvre de Sāvatthī, né dans un cimetière après la mort de sa mère en couches et élevé par un gardien de cimetière ; il rencontra le Bouddha à l’âge de sept ans et, ayant reçu la bienveillance comme sujet de méditation, atteignit bientôt l’état d’Arahant.

The son of a very poor woman of Sāvatthi, born in a cemetery after his mother died in childbirth and raised by a watchman; he met the Buddha at age seven and, given loving-kindness as his meditation subject, soon attained Arahantship.

Un autre enfant portant le même surnom, que son oncle attacha à un cadavre dans un cimetière pour qu’il soit dévoré par des chacals ; le pouvoir du Bouddha rompit ses liens et le mena à l’éveil, après quoi sa mère éplorée devint elle aussi entrée-dans-le-courant.

A child, also known by the same nickname, whose uncle bound him to a corpse in a charnel field to be devoured by jackals; the Buddha’s power broke his bonds and brought him to enlightenment, after which his grieving mother also became a Stream-winner.
