Apparently the general name given to those belonging to the Kassapa clan. Thus the Ājīvaka Guṇa (s.v. Mahānāradakassapa Jātaka) is addressed as Kassapagotta (J.vi.222) and again as Kassapa (J.vi.224, 229, 235).
