Rather than lining up external dictionaries side by side, we divide the senses of every Pāli word by meaning — the conceptual range each word carries — guided by our understanding of the Dhamma and of linguistics. So how one word differs across suttas and contexts is clear at a glance, not blurred into a single catch-all explanation.
More than glosses
Each entry is not just a paragraph of explanation but a structured body of knowledge: part of speech and word class, root and headword, inflection and sandhi changes, the layered build of compounds, and cited usages from the canon — taken apart, aligned, and laid out item by item. What you see is not roughly what this word means, but what it is made of, how it changes, and how the canon actually uses it.
Where the data comes from
We draw widely on openly available scholarly resources — the Digital Pāḷi Dictionary (DPD), SuttaCentral, and dozens of authoritative reference works and corpora across many languages — and bring in large AI models for synthesis, cross-comparison, and vector matching, compiling the final lexicon only after the distinct senses a Pāli word takes across suttas, corpora, and contexts are properly understood. Every source we use is recorded for attribution and traceable verification; the dictionary itself is our own compilation, not a copy of any single source.
Compilation and verification
Every entry must pass automated checks — spelling, punctuation, structure — before entering the database. Human-reviewed content is protected: automated AI revisions may only touch machine-generated material, never overwriting what a person has already finalised. Every change is written to an append-only audit log. We are candid that this dictionary is young and still being refined: accuracy is a mechanism we operate, not a number we advertise — and your feedback and corrections are part of that mechanism.
How to use it
Hover over a Pāli word in any answer (or tap, on touch screens), tap any word while reading the Pāli original, or search directly on the dictionary page. You can look a word up in any written form — inflected, sandhi, or compound — and it will be resolved to its headword. For now the dictionary works with romanised Pāli (IAST).
Pronunciation
Headword audio is synthesised with an open-source Sanskrit (Devanagari) TTS voice, whose sound system comes closest to the original pronunciation of Pāli; we also keep the DPD's audio as an alternative. We treat pronunciation with particular care and put quality before coverage, so not every word has audio yet.
Feedback and revision
If a sense, root, word form, or pronunciation looks wrong, tell us through the feedback entry on the word's page — your report goes to human review, we verify it against multiple sources, and once confirmed the correction is written back into the entry.
